Description
Centered on the lateral face, the deep masseter sits deep to the superficial masseter and occupies the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus, extending inferiorly toward the angle of the mandible. Superiorly, its fibers arise from the deep aspect and lower margin of the zygomatic arch, then pass inferoposteriorly to insert along the ramus, immediately lateral to the buccal space. From the anterior perspective, adjacent muscles of facial expression such as frontalis, orbicularis oculi, and zygomaticus frame the cheek, while the masseter forms the dominant vertical muscle column overlying the mandibular ramus. Fiber direction is clear. Deep masseter anatomy matters when you are trying to explain jaw elevation mechanics and temporomandibular joint loading during mastication, because the deep layer contributes a more posterior vector that helps stabilize the mandibular condyle against the articular eminence during forceful bite. Clinically, hypertrophy of the masseter can mimic a parotid or mandibular angle mass, and botulinum toxin injection planning depends on recognizing the safe zone relative to the anterior border of masseter (to avoid diffusion toward the risorius and smile asymmetry). Surgical exposure along the mandibular ramus, including approaches for mandibular fractures and orthognathic procedures, also benefits from a clear mental map of the masseter’s layered attachments to the zygomatic arch and ramus.
