Description
Deep to the superficial masseter, the deep masseter muscle occupies the lateral face of the mandibular ramus, its thick fibers running inferiorly toward the angle of the mandible and superiorly toward the zygomatic arch. From an anterior perspective, the muscle’s anterior border sits lateral to the buccinator and posterior to the oral commissure, hugging the mandible as it approaches the coronoid process and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region. The ramus and angle form the hard medial boundary, while the cheek’s soft tissues lie superficial and anterior. Dense. Powerful. Anterior visualization of the deep masseter matters because it frames the principal elevator of the mandible where clinicians palpate for bruxism-related hypertrophy and myofascial trigger points that refer pain toward the maxilla, zygoma, and preauricular area. This view also helps clarify why inflammation or spasm near the mandibular notch and coronoid process can mimic TMJ internal derangement, and why masseteric nerve blocks (a branch of V3) target the muscle on the deep surface near the sigmoid notch. For surgeons, the relationship to the parotid duct’s anterior course and the facial nerve’s more superficial trajectory informs safe dissection planes during parotid and mandibular approaches. Use this illustration in head and neck anatomy teaching to separate the deep masseter from the superficial layer and to reinforce the biomechanics of mastication during occlusion and clenching. It also fits oral and maxillofacial surgery, dentistry, and pain medicine materials covering masseter hypertrophy, botulinum toxin injection planning, and differential diagnosis of jaw pain.
