Description

The muscle belly occupies the region inferior to the zygomatic arch and posterior to the buccal cavity, with fibers running inferoposteriorly toward the angle and lateral ramus of the mandible, adjacent to the mandibular notch superiorly. Cranial bones including the frontal, parietal, and temporal bones outline the neurocranium above, while the maxilla and dentition sit anterior to the mandibular body. Posteriorly, the atlas and axis continue into the lower cervical vertebrae, and intervertebral discs are indicated in blue. Deep masseter anatomy matters when you need to explain jaw elevation as a coupled action across the temporomandibular joint and the cervical posture that often accompanies bruxism and clenching.
