Description
Running along the lateral face, the deep masseter lies inferior to the zygomatic arch and lateral surface of the mandibular ramus, partially covered by the superficial masseteric layer and the overlying skin. Its fibers course posteroinferiorly from the deep surface of the zygomatic bone and arch toward the angle and lateral ramus of the mandible, sitting anterior to the external acoustic meatus within the temporal bone. Adjacent bony landmarks include the maxilla and nasal bones anteriorly, the temporoparietal calvaria superiorly, and the upper and lower dentition aligned at the alveolar processes. Clear landmarks. Clinically, isolating the deep masseter matters because it drives mandibular elevation and contributes to clenching-related pain patterns that can mimic temporomandibular disorder, with tenderness often localized near the mandibular angle and along the zygomatic arch. The layered anatomy is also relevant in masseter hypertrophy management and when planning botulinum toxin injections, where staying within the masseter belly and respecting the parotid duct and marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve helps avoid functional and cosmetic complications. Dental and maxillofacial surgeons also reference this lateral relationship when approaching the mandibular ramus and angle during fixation or osteotomy, where masseteric stripping influences bleeding and postoperative trismus.
