Description

Viewed from the lateral aspect of a male skull, the masseter occupies the posterolateral cheek, spanning from the zygomatic arch superiorly to the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus and angle inferiorly. Superficial fibers descend inferoposteriorly toward the gonial region, while deeper fibers run more vertically toward the mid-ramus and coronoid-adjacent area, sitting anterior to the parotid region and lateral to the mandibular body. The mandibular condyle and coronoid process frame the muscle’s superior attachments in relation to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Understanding this lateral anatomy matters when you need to localize pain generators around the jaw and TMJ and when teaching force vectors in mastication. Masseter hypertrophy, bruxism-related myofascial pain, and temporomandibular disorders often present with tenderness along the mandibular angle, exactly where the superficial belly concentrates. For procedural planning, this view also clarifies why botulinum toxin injections stay over the posterior-inferior masseter to reduce bite force while minimizing spread toward the zygomaticus complex or parotid duct. Use this plate in dental anatomy and head and neck gross anatomy courses to anchor muscle attachments against clear bony landmarks, and in oral and maxillofacial surgery or TMJ clinic materials to explain palpation points, trigger zones, and injection corridors on the lateral face.
