Description
Viewed laterally on an adult male head and upper neck, the temporalis occupies the temporal fossa superior to the zygomatic arch, its fan-shaped fibers converging inferiorly to a tendon passing deep to the arch toward the coronoid process of the mandible. Posterior to the temple, the external ear region and mastoid area form a bony reference, while the sternocleidomastoid descends anteroinferiorly along the lateral neck and the upper trapezius spans posterolaterally from the nuchal region toward the acromion. Fiber direction is clear: temporalis runs predominantly infero-anterior, contrasting with the more oblique, caudolateral course of superficial cervical and shoulder musculature. Clean landmarks anchor orientation. For teaching mastication, this side view gives a straightforward read on how temporalis elevation and retrusion of the mandible relate to temporomandibular joint mechanics, bruxism, and myofascial pain patterns that refer to the temple. Surgeons also care about this anatomy: the frontal branch of the facial nerve crosses the zygomatic arch in the superficial temporal region, and temporalis fascia and muscle are mobilized in temporalis flap reconstruction for orbital or midface defects. Palpation and injection targets are easier to justify when the tendon’s line of pull toward the coronoid process is explicit. It matters in clinic.
