Description
Positioned on the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus, the deep masseter is highlighted as the principal structure, lying deep to the superficial masseter and extending from the zygomatic arch toward its insertion along the ramus and angle of the mandible. Superiorly it abuts the zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch, while posteriorly it approaches the region of the parotid gland and the external ear. Anterior to the muscle, the body of the mandible and adjacent facial musculature frame the cheek region, and inferiorly the mandibular angle marks the transition toward the upper neck. Bony contours of the skull provide clear attachment context. A lateral view of the deep layer matters because it clarifies the true thickness and line of pull of the masseter complex, which elevates the mandible and contributes to ipsilateral excursion during mastication. This perspective supports surgical planning for approaches to the mandibular ramus and angle, where masseteric fibers must be elevated and later repaired to reduce postoperative trismus. It also maps a common pain generator: myofascial trigger points in the deep masseter often refer to the teeth and temporomandibular joint, complicating the differential diagnosis of odontogenic pain.
