Description
Shown in lateral profile, the temporalis muscle spreads in a fan-shaped sheet from the temporal fossa, occupying the squamous part of the temporal bone and approaching the superior temporal line. Its fibers converge inferiorly into a thick tendon that passes deep to the zygomatic arch and inserts on the coronoid process and anterior border of the mandibular ramus. Surrounding bony landmarks include the lateral cranial vault, the nasal aperture and maxilla anteriorly, and the mandible inferiorly, with the cervical vertebrae and upper thoracic spine aligned posterior to the facial skeleton. Portions of the ribs, clavicle, and scapula provide thoracic and shoulder-girdle context behind the head and neck. Clinically, this lateral view clarifies the temporalis relationship to the zygomatic arch and coronoid process, the two landmarks that matter when you interpret mandibular mechanics or plan approaches in the temporal region. Temporal artery biopsy runs superficial to the temporalis fascia, and temporal craniotomy requires safe dissection through the temporal fascia to avoid muscle devascularization and postoperative temporalis atrophy with chewing pain. Bruxism and temporomandibular disorders often present with temporalis tenderness, and the muscle’s posterior fibers drive mandibular retraction, a point that students routinely miss when only masseter is emphasized.
