Description
Seen from an anterior perspective, the male skull is presented with the temporalis muscles highlighted bilaterally as broad, fan-shaped sheets occupying the temporal fossae on the lateral cranium. Each temporalis originates along the temporal lines and temporal fossa and converges inferiorly into a thick tendon that passes deep to the zygomatic arch to insert on the coronoid process and anterior border of the mandibular ramus. Orbits, nasal aperture, maxilla, and mandible frame the midline, while the clavicles and superior ribs sit inferior to the craniofacial complex with the cervical vertebrae aligned in the midline posteriorly. Orientation is clear. For teaching mastication, few muscles read better in this projection. The temporalis is the main elevator of the mandible and, through its posterior fibers, a strong retractor, so its vector relative to the coronoid process explains why clenching loads the temporomandibular joint while also stabilizing occlusion. Clinically, this anatomy matters in temporalis tendon transfer and coronoidectomy, and it also underpins patterns of myofascial pain where temporalis trigger points refer to the temple and periorbital region and are often mistaken for tension-type headache. Palpation landmarks follow the temporal lines. Simple.
