Description
Spanning the temporal fossa in lateral profile, the temporalis muscle fans superiorly from the temporal lines and squamous part of the temporal bone, then narrows inferiorly as its tendon passes deep to the zygomatic arch to reach the coronoid process and anterior border of the mandibular ramus. Superficial to it, the temporalis fascia forms a taut aponeurotic layer, while the auricle lies posterior to the muscle belly and the mandibular condyle sits posteroinferior at the temporomandibular joint. The translucent skin layer keeps the surface landmarks readable without losing the bony context. Orientation is clean. Function follows fiber direction: anterior fibers elevate the mandible, while the more posterior fibers retract it, a distinction that becomes obvious when you trace the fan-shaped muscle from superior to inferior toward the coronoid process. This lateral teaching view also supports common clinical correlations, including temporalis tenderness in bruxism and referred pain patterns that mimic temporomandibular disorder, and it helps frame why coronoid hyperplasia can mechanically limit mouth opening by impinging beneath the zygomatic arch. Surgical planning benefits from this anatomy as well, since frontotemporal (pterional) approaches and temporalis-splitting incisions must respect the temporalis fascia and the course of the frontal branch of the facial nerve in the superficial temporal fascia.
