Temporal Muscle Under the Skin

Posterior scalp and upper neck are rendered with the skin conceptually translucent, exposing the temporalis as it fans superiorly across the temporal fossa beneath the temporal fascia and converges inferiorly toward the mandibular coronoid process, just anterior to the auricular region. Midline, the occipital bone and external occipital protuberance anchor the nuchal musculature, with the cervical spinous processes descending inferiorly into the posterior neck. Lateral contours include the posterior mandible and temporomandibular region, while the shoulder girdle enters inferiorly with the scapular spines and clavicular outlines providing orientation to the cervicoscapular junction. Temporalis anatomy matters most when you need to explain mandibular elevation and retrusion in mastication, and when differentiating it from masseter-driven clenching pain. Posterior and lateral head views also map cleanly onto common operative corridors: the temporalis fascia and muscle are encountered during pterional and temporal craniotomies, and the muscle’s bulk and attachment help clarify postoperative temporalis atrophy, trismus, or contour deformity if the deep temporal neurovascular supply is compromised. Short and to the point: this is where bite force begins.
