Description
Lateral head and upper neck anatomy is rendered with the temporalis muscle (musculus temporalis) visible beneath the skin and temporal fascia, occupying the temporal fossa on the lateral aspect of the cranium. Broad superior fibers arise from the frontal, parietal, temporal, and sphenoid bones along the temporal lines, then converge inferiorly as a thick tendon passing deep to the zygomatic arch toward insertion on the coronoid process and anterior border of the mandibular ramus. The mandible with dentition is shown anterior and inferior to the muscle belly, while the calvarial sutures and cranial contours provide bony landmarks for orientation. Cervical vertebrae appear inferior to the occiput, maintaining spatial continuity between skull base and neck. Temporalis is the dominant elevator and retrusor of the mandible, so a lateral under-skin view clarifies how posterior fibers draw the mandible posteriorly while anterior fibers contribute to elevation during the power stroke of mastication. Clinically, this is the muscle that becomes tender and hypertrophied in bruxism and temporomandibular disorder, and it is frequently implicated in tension-type headache patterns that refer pain to the temple. Surgeons also track its relationship to the zygomatic arch and mandibular ramus during approaches for coronoidectomy, mandibular fracture fixation, and temporalis fascia harvest, where preserving function and minimizing postoperative trismus matter.
