Description
Seen on the lateral cranium of an adult male, the temporalis muscle is highlighted superficial to the temporal bone and deep to the temporal fascia, filling the temporal fossa superior to the zygomatic arch and anterior to the external acoustic meatus. Its fibers converge inferiorly to a tendon that passes medial to the zygomatic arch and inserts on the coronoid process and anterior margin of the mandibular ramus. Underlying skeletal landmarks include the orbit, maxilla, nasal bones, dentition, and the mandible in profile, with the upper cervical vertebrae aligned inferior to the occiput. Clear definition of temporalis and its fascial envelope matters when teaching mastication mechanics and when planning access to the lateral skull. Clinically, temporalis hypertrophy and myofascial trigger points can refer pain to the temple and dentition and are often confused with temporomandibular disorder; this view helps separate temporalis tenderness from masseteric pain patterns and from temporal arteritis workups. Surgeons also track the relationship between the temporal fascia, zygomatic arch, and coronoid process during coronoidectomy for trismus, temporalis tendon transfer, or when elevating a temporalis flap for craniofacial reconstruction.
