Description
Rendered in right lateral profile, the abdominal cavity is opened in transparency to expose the small intestine of an adult Asian woman, with the duodenum fixed superiorly and posteriorly as it curves from the pyloric region toward the ligament of Treitz. Distal to that junction, jejunal loops occupy a more central and left-sided position, while the ileum courses inferiorly and rightward toward the ileocecal region, where the broader large intestine frames the small-bowel coils. Mesenteric suspension is implied by the orderly drape of loops within the peritoneal space. Clear relationships. Side-on orientation matters when you need to teach or plan around depth, not just surface anatomy. This is the perspective that helps clinicians explain why jejunal and ileal loops can shift with posture, pregnancy, ascites, or postoperative adhesions, while the duodenum remains relatively tethered and retroperitoneal in its descending and horizontal parts.
