Viewed from the dorsum of the male foot, the metatarsals and phalanges are presented as the superficial framework, while the plantar interossei muscles sit deep within the intermetatarsal spaces on the plantar aspects of metatarsals III to V. Their muscle bellies run obliquely distal, and their tendons pass anteriorly toward the metatarsophalangeal joints to join the medial sides of the proximal phalanges and the extensor expansion. Dorsal tendons of extensor digitorum longus and extensor digitorum brevis lie more superficially, crossing the forefoot from posterior to anterior as a contrasting layer over the interosseous interval. Functionally, the plantar interossei adduct the lateral three toes toward the second toe, and they assist lumbricals in flexing the metatarsophalangeal joints while extending the interphalangeal joints via the extensor hood.
