Description
Running superficially along the medial border of the scapula, the dorsal scapular vein courses inferiorly adjacent to the rhomboid minor and rhomboid major, collecting venous return from the posterior shoulder girdle. A posterior view also brings the scapular spine, vertebral border, and superior angle into clear relationship with the cervicothoracic spinous processes and the posterior ribs. Lateral to the vein, the proximal humerus and posterior axillary region frame its pathway toward deeper venous channels. Blue venous tributaries interlace with red arterial counterparts and fine cervical and scapular nerves. Clinically, this corridor matters when you are teaching the layered anatomy deep to trapezius and superficial to the thoracic wall, because the dorsal scapular vessels and dorsal scapular nerve track together along the medial scapular border.
