Description
Posterior body surface landmarks frame the retroperitoneal urinary tract, with the paired kidneys positioned high in the posterior abdomen on either side of the vertebral column and the ureters descending inferiorly toward the true pelvis. Each kidney sits lateral to the spine, with its superior pole nearer the costovertebral region and its inferior pole approaching the level of the iliac crest. The ureters track caudally from the renal pelves, running anteroinferiorly along the posterior abdominal wall before entering the pelvis to reach the urinary bladder in the midline, deep to the anterior pelvic structures. Skin, hair, and surface contour remain visible to keep the organ locations anchored to a living female torso. A posterior perspective makes the kidneys’ relationship to the back clinically legible, which is exactly what you need when teaching costovertebral angle tenderness in pyelonephritis or when explaining why renal pain often refers to the flank while distal ureteric obstruction can shift symptoms toward the groin. The long, uninterrupted course of each ureter also supports discussions of obstructing ureteric calculi and typical narrowing points (ureteropelvic junction, crossing of the iliac vessels, and ureterovesical junction), even if those constrictions are not individually labeled.
