Description

Visible through a semi-transparent torso, the paired kidneys sit retroperitoneally on the posterior abdominal wall, with the right kidney slightly inferior to the left beneath the costal margin. Each renal pelvis narrows into a ureter that descends inferiorly along the psoas major region, crosses the pelvic brim near the common iliac vessels, and continues to the urinary bladder in the anterior pelvis. The bladder occupies a midline position posterior to the pubic symphysis, and the short female urethra exits inferiorly from the bladder neck. Orientation is essentially anterior, with posterior renal position still readable. For teaching topography, this full-tract presentation clarifies why renal pain from nephrolithiasis often begins at the costovertebral angle and then migrates inferomedially as a ureteric calculus advances toward the ureterovesical junction. Ureteral course matters in the operating room. During hysterectomy and other pelvic procedures, the distal ureter runs close to the uterine artery and lateral vaginal fornix, a common site of iatrogenic injury, while more proximally it remains an easily overlooked retroperitoneal structure. Use this asset in gross anatomy and urogenital modules to anchor surface anatomy and organ relationships before students move to sectional CT or MR correlation. It also suits patient-facing education on kidney stones, hydronephrosis, vesicoureteral reflux, and catheter-associated bladder considerations, where a clean whole-system view helps explain symptom patterns and procedure targets.
