Description
Running along the anterior compartment of the forearm, the flexor digitorum profundus is presented as a broad, deep muscle belly arising from the proximal ulna and adjacent interosseous membrane, then narrowing into four tendons that pass distal to the wrist toward the index through little fingers. Superficial flexors are cleared or subdued so you can read its relationship to the ulna medially and the partially visible radius laterally, with the interosseous space separating the two bones. At the elbow, the humeroulnar and humeroradial articulations frame the proximal attachments, while the carpal bones, metacarpals, and phalanges provide distal context for the tendon course. Deep. Distal. Direct. Functionally, this view matters because flexor digitorum profundus is the only muscle that produces flexion at the distal interphalangeal joints, a point that can get lost when learners focus on the more superficial flexor digitorum superficialis. Clinically, the tendon’s distal insertion on the bases of the distal phalanges is the anatomic substrate for jersey finger (ring finger most common), where avulsion or rupture leads to loss of active DIP flexion and may require surgical repair or tendon grafting. Its deep position against the ulna also explains why swelling or scarring in the flexor-pronator mass can tether tendon glide, altering composite finger flexion.
