Description
Running in lateral profile, the femoral shaft descends from the proximal metaphysis toward the distal femur, with the greater trochanter projecting posterolaterally and the lesser trochanter tucked medially on the posterior aspect of the proximal femur. Distally, the lateral femoral condyle and trochlear surface align with the tibial plateau, and a transverse fracture line interrupts the cortex near the supracondylar region, just proximal to the articular surface. Articular cartilage caps the femoral condyles and tibial plateau, while a meniscus wedges between them, and capsuloligamentous bands contour the joint margin. Distal femur fractures sit at an awkward intersection of diaphyseal mechanics and knee joint congruity, so even a simple transverse pattern can translate into malalignment, limb-length issues, and post-traumatic osteoarthritis if reduction is imperfect. A lateral view clarifies posterior angulation and sagittal plane displacement, the same deformity driven by gastrocnemius pull on the distal fragment, and it keeps attention on the nearby popliteal vessels and peroneal nerve when discussing acute assessment.
