Description
Centered on the midface, the paired ossa nasalia (nasal bones) are shown from an anterior perspective, meeting at the internasal suture and articulating superiorly with the frontal bone at the nasion. A transverse fracture line crosses near the radix of the nose, with the fracture margins emphasized against the surrounding bony nasal bridge. Inferior to the break, the apertura piriformis is framed by the maxillae, while the nasal septum divides the nasal cavity in the midline, transitioning anteriorly toward septal cartilage at the vestibulum nasi. Zygomatic bones and the dentate maxilla and mandible provide facial context and scale. Anterior nasal bone fractures are common after blunt trauma and this view makes the typical deforming vectors easier to teach: lateral impact drives one nasal bone posteriorly and medially while the contralateral side may flare laterally, producing external deviation even when displacement at the fracture line looks modest. Septal involvement matters. A septal hematoma can accompany an apparently straightforward nasal fracture and, if missed, may lead to cartilage necrosis and a saddle-nose deformity. The highlighted nasal cavity and septum also support discussion of epistaxis sources, including injury near Kiesselbach’s area on the anterior septum during the same mechanism. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and head and neck modules to orient learners to bony landmarks (nasion, piriform aperture, internasal suture) before introducing soft tissue nasal anatomy and fracture patterns.
