Description
Shown from the lateral aspect of an adult male skull, the lateral nasal cartilage (upper lateral cartilage) is highlighted along the dorsolateral nose, positioned inferior to the nasal bones and superior to the major alar cartilage at the nasal apex. Its posterior margin aligns toward the piriform aperture and the cartilaginous septum, while its anterior free edge contributes to the contour of the nasal dorsum. Surrounding bony landmarks, including the orbit, zygomatic arch, maxilla, and mandible, establish facial proportions and the relationship of the cartilaginous framework to the midface. Attention to the overlap between the lateral nasal cartilage and the upper border of the major alar cartilage matters because this junction supports the internal nasal valve region, the narrowest segment of the nasal airway. Small changes in cartilage position after rhinoplasty, nasal trauma, or scarring can narrow the valve angle and produce symptomatic obstruction even when the septum appears straight. This is a common failure point in dorsal hump reduction and in over-resection of upper lateral cartilages. A critical landmark.
