Description
Seen in lateral profile, the adult male nasal apex (tip of the nose) is defined by the paired alar cartilages (cartilagines alares majores) as they curve anteriorly and inferiorly to form the lobule, with the alar rim continuing posteriorly into the ala nasi. Superior to the dome, the lower lateral cartilage transitions toward the lateral crus beneath the soft-tissue triangle, while the distal dorsum nasi rises posteriorly toward the osseocartilaginous junction. Anterior skin and fibrofatty tissue overlie the cartilage framework, and the external naris opens inferoposteriorly at the margin between the ala and the columellar region. Lateral visualization of the tip is a working view for rhinoplasty planning because it makes projection, rotation, and the contour of the alar lobule legible in a way that frontal views often obscure. Small changes to the lower lateral cartilage (cephalic trim, dome sutures, or alar batten graft placement) can correct boxy tip shape, alar rim retraction, or external nasal valve collapse, but they also risk contour irregularities when the cartilaginous support is thin or the soft-tissue envelope is tight. For teaching, it is also a clean way to anchor terminology around apex nasi versus dorsum and ala. Useful in head and neck anatomy modules, facial plastic surgery and ENT teaching files, and figure plates for chapters discussing nasal tip support mechanisms, external nasal valve function, or rhinoplasty approaches (open versus endonasal) with attention to the alar cartilages.
