Description
Centered in an anterior skull view, the frontal bone forms the forehead and the superior rims of the orbits, with its supraorbital margins curving laterally above each eye socket. Medially, the bone’s nasal part and glabellar region sit superior to the piriform aperture and articulate with the paired nasal bones, while the zygomatic processes project inferolaterally toward the zygomatic bones at the frontozygomatic region. The frontal squama rises superiorly toward the coronal suture line with the parietal bones, and inferiorly the orbital plates contribute to the roof of each orbit. Clean midline symmetry is clear. Anterior frontal bone anatomy matters because the supraorbital margin and supraorbital notch or foramen are key landmarks for the supraorbital nerve and vessels, a frequent target for regional anesthesia in laceration repair and frontal scalp procedures. Fractures through the frontal sinus, typically just superior to the orbits in the superomedial frontal bone, carry specific concerns for cosmetic contour, nasofrontal outflow obstruction, and possible cerebrospinal fluid leak when the posterior table is involved. Small details. They change management. Use this illustration in head and neck anatomy teaching to anchor bony orbit boundaries, facial buttresses, and the relationship of the forehead to the nasal cavity and maxilla in a single frame. It also fits well in emergency medicine and maxillofacial surgery materials covering forehead trauma, frontal sinus fracture classification, and supraorbital nerve block technique. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
