Description
Rendered in posterior anatomical position beneath the skin, the superficial back musculature is presented from the occiput to the plantar aspect of the foot with fiber direction emphasized by striation. Superiorly, the occipital region is banded in red over the nuchal line area, adjacent to the upper fibers of trapezius and the posterior cervical muscle mass (splenius capitis and semispinalis capitis) deep to the investing fascia. Inferior to the scapulae, latissimus dorsi sweeps inferolaterally toward its humeral insertion while the thoracolumbar fascia anchors erector spinae along the midline, continuing to the pelvis where gluteus maximus overlies gluteus medius and the iliotibial tract descends along the lateral thigh; distally, the posterior thigh shows the hamstrings (biceps femoris laterally, semitendinosus and semimembranosus medially) leading into gastrocnemius and the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon. A posterior full-body view like this is the clearest way to teach extensor-chain continuity, from cervical extensors and trapezius through thoracolumbar fascia into gluteus maximus and the hamstrings during hip hinge, gait, and deadlift mechanics. The highlighted occipital band naturally supports discussion of cervicogenic headache, occipital neuralgia, and trapezius or suboccipital trigger points, where myofascial tension along the superior nuchal line can refer pain to the scalp and behind the eye. Small landmark, big clinical payoff.
