Description
Running from the occiput into the upper thorax, the axial skeleton is rendered with the skull, mandible, cervical vertebrae (C1 to C7), and the superior thoracic vertebrae with their rib articulations. Anteriorly, the sternum and costal cartilages frame the thoracic inlet, while the clavicles sit superolateral to the manubrium and lead laterally toward the scapular girdle. Atlas and axis occupy the most superior cervical position, immediately inferior to the cranial base, and the cervical lordosis transitions into the beginning of thoracic kyphosis as the ribs sweep posterolaterally from the vertebral column. Cranial sutures, orbits, and the nasal aperture remain clearly defined for orientation. Color emphasis on the cervical spine directs attention to a frequent source of pain and neurologic symptoms in adult women, where degenerative disc disease and uncovertebral osteophytes commonly narrow the intervertebral foramina at C5–C6 and C6–C7. That anatomic relationship matters when correlating dermatomal radiculopathy with bony landmarks, and when teaching why foraminal stenosis differs from central canal stenosis in its clinical pattern. Small joints, big consequences. The inclusion of ribs, sternum, and clavicles also supports discussion of the thoracic inlet, where posture and cervicothoracic alignment can influence symptoms attributed to thoracic outlet syndrome. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and osteology teaching modules to anchor identification of craniovertebral junction landmarks, cervical curvature, and costovertebral relationships, or in spine and rehabilitation texts addressing cervical spondylosis, whiplash-associated disorders, and basic surgical orientation for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion planning.
