Description
Centered beneath the cranial base, the seven cervical vertebrae (C1 to C7) align from the atlas immediately inferior to the occipital condyles down to the vertebra prominens at the cervicothoracic junction. C2 (axis) sits inferior to C1, its dens projecting superiorly toward the anterior arch of the atlas, while the mid cervical bodies (C3 to C6) stack anterior to the spinal canal and posterior to the pharyngeal airway. Laterally, the transverse processes carry transverse foramina that form a paired vertical corridor for the vertebral arteries, and the intervertebral foramina open posterolaterally between adjacent pedicles. Superiorly the skull is rendered with orbital rims, nasal aperture, maxilla, and mandible, and inferiorly the cervical column transitions toward the upper thorax with the clavicles and proximal humeral heads flanking the manubrium and first ribs. For teaching cervical biomechanics, this arrangement clarifies why rotation concentrates at C1 to C2, while flexion and extension distribute across the lower segments, and it makes the spatial logic of the foramina easy to read. Trauma and surgical planning hinge on these landmarks: odontoid fractures and atlantoaxial instability threaten the spinal cord at the level where the canal is narrow, and uncovertebral osteophytes at C5 to C6 commonly encroach on the exiting nerve root within the intervertebral foramen.
