Description

Layered soft tissues of the male head and upper cervical region are rendered to expose superficial facial muscles and deeper landmarks over the cranium. Lateral to the mandible, the masseter occupies the ramus while the temporalis fans superiorly in the temporal fossa, its tendon passing deep to the zygomatic arch toward the coronoid process. Along the anterolateral neck, the sternocleidomastoid runs obliquely from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle, with the carotid sheath structures positioned deep and slightly medial, including the common carotid artery and internal jugular vein. Branching facial vessels and nerves traverse the cheek and perioral region in close relationship to the mimetic musculature, with the orbit and external ear providing fixed surface reference points. That layered arrangement matters when teaching or planning work in the parotid and upper neck compartments, where the facial nerve’s extracranial branches must be preserved as they course from the parotid region across the masseter toward the midface. The carotid artery and jugular vein deep to sternocleidomastoid form the practical target zone for central venous access and carotid endarterectomy exposure, and their depth relationships help explain why neck rotation and extension change the landmark geometry. Facial trauma and lacerations also follow these maps. Bleeding tracks along named vessels. Use this illustration for gross anatomy and head and neck modules, oral and maxillofacial surgery teaching files, and textbook spreads that need a single plate tying muscles, vessels, and peripheral nerves to palpable surface anatomy of the face and cervical region. It also supports patient-facing counseling graphics for parotidectomy, facelift approaches, and neck dissection orientation. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
