Description
Centered within a cut section of the adult male cranium, the arachnoid mater lies just deep to the dura mater and remains separated from it by a potential subdural space rather than firm attachment. Arachnoid trabeculae span inferiorly from the arachnoid to the pia mater, crossing the subarachnoid space that conforms to the cerebral gyri and sulci. Superficial cortical vessels course within the subarachnoid compartment on the brain surface, while the dural venous sinuses sit more superficially within the dura along the inner table of the skull. A delicate membrane, but a decisive boundary. That dural arachnoid interface is where subdural hematomas develop after bridging veins tear as they traverse from the subarachnoid space to the dural sinuses, a mechanism clinicians link to acceleration-deceleration trauma and age-related brain atrophy. The subarachnoid space, by contrast, is a true space containing cerebrospinal fluid, so subarachnoid hemorrhage tracks along sulci and basal cisterns and becomes immediately relevant to aneurysmal rupture patterns and CT interpretation. This cut section format also clarifies why lumbar puncture samples CSF from the subarachnoid space, not the subdural compartment, and why arachnoid granulations provide CSF resorption into dural venous sinuses.
