Description
Displayed within a cut cranial section, the dura mater lines the inner table of the skull and forms the major dural venous sinuses, rendered in blue, along the midline and parasagittal region. Fine arachnoid veins course superficial to the pia mater and deep to the dura, running superiorly and medially to reach the superior sagittal sinus and adjacent lacunae laterales. Bridging veins traverse the subdural space to enter the sinus wall, while smaller superficial cerebral veins spread over the convexity before converging toward the midline. Spatial layering is clear. Skull, dura, arachnoid, then pia. This relationship matters because the interface between bridging veins, arachnoid granulations, and the superior sagittal sinus is where venous drainage meets cerebrospinal fluid resorption, and it is also where pathology concentrates. Tearing of bridging veins after blunt head trauma produces subdural hematoma, classically crescentic on imaging and often crossing suture lines, while sinus thrombosis can propagate along the sagittal sinus and impair cortical venous outflow. For surgical planning, the parasagittal corridor demands respect for these veins during craniotomy and dural opening, since sacrificing a dominant cortical draining vein can precipitate venous infarction or hemorrhagic conversion. Neuroanatomy and meningeal physiology courses use this plate to teach meningeal layers, venous sinus anatomy, and the distinction between superficial cerebral veins and dural channels.
