Description
Centered within a sectioned adult male cranium, the dura mater lines the inner table of the calvaria as a tough, pale sheath closely adherent to frontal, parietal, and occipital bones. Along the midline, the meningeal layer forms the falx cerebri, descending between the cerebral hemispheres and lying superior to the corpus callosum. Laterally, the arachnoid mater spans the cortical sulci while the pia mater follows the gyri and sulcal depths over the cerebral convexities. Cortical gyri and sulci dominate the field, with the meningeal margins framing the brain at the cut edges of bone. A superior meningeal view like this is a clean way to teach the difference between periosteal (endosteal) and meningeal dura and why their separation matters clinically. Epidural hematoma tracks between the skull and periosteal dura, classically after middle meningeal artery injury, while subdural hematoma collects deep to the dura after tearing of bridging veins as they traverse from arachnoid to dural venous sinuses. Falx anatomy also matters at the bedside, since midline shift and subfalcine herniation compress the anterior cerebral artery against the falx and can produce contralateral leg weakness. Neuroanatomy and head and neck gross anatomy courses use this cutaway to orient students to meninges, dural reflections, and the relationship of cortex to cranial vault before introducing CSF pathways and venous sinus drainage. It also fits well in neurosurgery or emergency medicine teaching materials discussing traumatic extra-axial hemorrhage patterns and the anatomic basis for burr hole placement relative to the inner skull surface.
