Description
Arcing across the endocranial surface of the adult male skull, the dura mater lines the cranial cavity as the periosteal layer adherent to the calvaria, with the meningeal layer forming subtle folds along the midline. Medial to lateral, you would expect the falx cerebri attachment along the sagittal suture region, with impressions and grooves for the superior sagittal sinus, middle meningeal vessels, and the dural reflections approaching the petrous temporal bone. Inferiorly at the cranial base, the dura spans the anterior, middle, and posterior cranial fossae around the clinoid processes and the margins of the foramen magnum, while the arachnoid and pia mater lie deep to it, separated by the subarachnoid space. Understanding the potential space between skull and dura matters because it is where epidural hematoma forms after traumatic laceration of the middle meningeal artery at the pterion, producing a rapidly expanding, lens-shaped collection that can compress the temporal lobe and uncal region. Dural venous sinus relationships also become clearer in this orientation: venous sinus thrombosis, dural-based masses such as meningioma, and operative exposure of the anterior and middle fossae all depend on knowing where dura adheres tightly versus where it can be elevated. A useful map for safe dissection.
