Description
Seen in left lateral profile, the auricular cartilage forms the scaffold of the external ear (pinna), with the helix curving along the posterolateral rim and the antihelix rising medial to it before splitting into superior and inferior crura. Between these ridges, the scapha lies as a shallow, boat-shaped groove lateral to the antihelix, while the triangular fossa sits more superiorly between the crura. Anterior to the concha and external acoustic meatus, the tragus projects posteriorly toward the meatal opening, opposed inferiorly by the antitragus across the intertragic notch. Bone and neck landmarks sit deep and medial, placing the cartilage in clear relation to the temporal region and adjacent cervical soft tissues. Surface topography of auricular cartilage matters because surgical planning and trauma patterns follow the folds, not the skin.
