Description
Positioned on the lateral aspect of the temporal bone, the auricular cartilage (elastic cartilage) is rendered in profile against the bony skull and upper cervical spine, with the helix forming the outer rim and the antihelix rising as a prominent medial ridge that bifurcates superiorly toward the superior and inferior crura. Anteriorly, the tragus projects posterior to the temporomandibular joint region and partially overlies the external acoustic meatus, while the concha forms a deep concavity leading into the ear canal. Inferiorly, the lobule is implied as a noncartilaginous continuation, contrasting with the firmer cartilaginous framework above. Mandibular teeth, the orbit, nasal cavity, and cranial sutures provide fixed landmarks for orientation. Lateral auricular anatomy matters because small changes in the antihelical fold, conchal depth, or tragal position alter both function and surgical planning, from ear canal access to otoplasty for prominent ear where underdevelopment of the antihelix and conchal hypertrophy are common findings. This perspective also supports discussion of trauma and reconstruction, since auricular hematoma strips perichondrium from cartilage and can progress to cauliflower ear if not drained and compressed.
