Description
Seen in lateral profile on a male head and neck, the auricular cartilage outlines the pinna with the helix forming the outer rim and the antihelix running as a parallel curved prominence that divides superiorly into its crura. Medially, the concha (cavum and cymba) funnels toward the external acoustic meatus, while the tragus projects posteriorly over the meatal opening and the antitragus sits inferior and posterior to it, separated by the intertragic notch. The lobule is present as a noncartilaginous inferior soft tissue continuation, and the scapha lies between helix and antihelix. Surrounding grayscale musculature places the auricle posterior to the masseter region and anterior to the upper sternocleidomastoid, with the parotid-masseteric area immediately anteroinferior. Lateral auricular cartilage anatomy matters when you need reliable surface landmarks for otologic procedures and facial surgery planning. Perichondritis and auricular hematoma (classically after contact trauma) track along the perichondrium over the scapha and antihelix and can progress to cauliflower ear if not drained and compressed. This view also clarifies where local anesthetic for an auricular ring block diffuses around the cartilage while avoiding intrachondral injection, and it reinforces the relationship of the concha to the canal for hearing aid and earmold fitting.
