Description
Lateral head and neck anatomy is rendered with the auricular cartilage (cartilago auriculae) isolated in red against grayscale facial and cervical musculature. The helix and antihelix form the superior and posterior rim and inner Y-shaped ridge, while the scapha lies between them and the concha deepens anteriorly toward the external acoustic meatus. Inferiorly, the tragus and antitragus border the intertragic notch, and the lobule sits most inferior and lacks cartilage. Cartilage contours sit superficial to the temporalis fascia and parotid region, with the auricle positioned lateral to the mastoid process and posterolateral to the temporomandibular joint. Attention to auricular morphology matters in both reconstruction and access. Lacerations and hematoma of the pinna can strip perichondrium from cartilage, predisposing to cauliflower ear if not drained and compressed, and this view clarifies where the conchal bowl and antihelical folds tend to deform. Otoplasty planning also depends on the relationship between helix, antihelix, and concha, since suture placement along the antihelical crura or conchal setback changes the auriculocephalic angle without compromising the external auditory canal. Small but consequential anatomy. Even the tragal cartilage is a frequent donor site for tympanoplasty and other otologic grafting.
