Description
Positioned on the lateral aspect of the male skull, the superior auricular muscle is shown as a thin muscular slip coursing from the temporal (deep temporal) fascia toward the superior margin of the auricle. Its fibers sit superficial to the squamous part of the temporal bone and superior to the external acoustic meatus, adjacent to the temporalis muscle belly highlighted on the side of the head. Posteriorly, the auricular attachments lie near the mastoid region of the temporal bone, while inferiorly the soft tissues transition toward the lateral neck over the upper cervical spine. Small and easy to overlook, the superior auricular muscle matters because it sits in the same surgical neighborhood as common incisions and dissection planes used for facelift (rhytidectomy), otoplasty, and preauricular approaches to the temporomandibular joint and parotid region. Its fascial origin from the temporal fascia provides a clean landmark for teaching superficial temporal anatomy, and it reinforces the concept that the auricle is tethered by multiple muscular and fibrous connections rather than floating freely. Nerve supply from the temporal branches of the facial nerve also makes it a practical reference when discussing iatrogenic facial nerve injury and subtle postoperative ear position changes. Use this lateral perspective in head and neck anatomy teaching to anchor the relationship between auricular muscles, the temporalis region, and palpable bony landmarks of the temporal bone and zygomatic arch. It also fits well in operative anatomy references illustrating superficial dissection layers around the ear, and in dental and maxillofacial curricula when orienting students to the temporalis and adjacent preauricular soft tissues.
