Description
Arising from the lateral surface of the temporal region just anterior to the external ear, the anterior auricular muscle (auricularis anterior) appears as a small fan-shaped slip coursing posteriorly toward the root of the auricle. Its thin tendon blends with the anterior aspect of the auricular cartilage near the helix, sitting superficial to the temporalis fascia and anterior to the tragus. A lateral skull view places it in clear relationship to the temporal bone and squamous suture lines superiorly, with the mandible and dentition inferior and anterior, and the cervical vertebrae stacked posterior to the mandibular ramus. Functionally, auricularis anterior is one of the extrinsic auricular muscles supplied by the temporal branches of the facial nerve, so it becomes a useful teaching landmark when tracing CN VII across the zygomatic arch and into the temporoparietal fascia. Small muscle, common relevance. In facelift or temporal region dissection, confusing this slip with superficial fascial bands can lead to poor orientation, and its proximity to preauricular incisions makes it a reminder of how close the facial nerve runs in this zone; scarring or iatrogenic injury can reduce the already limited voluntary anterior pinna movement in many adults. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy labs to distinguish intrinsic from extrinsic auricular musculature, and in facial nerve modules that pair cadaveric dissection with surface anatomy around the preauricular crease and zygomatic arch. It also fits well in ENT or plastic surgery teaching files that illustrate safe tissue planes during preauricular approaches, with the skull sutures and cervical spine providing stable bony context for orientation across the temporal region.
