Description
Layered beneath the dermis of the lateral male face, the anterior auricular muscle (musculus auricularis anterior) sits immediately anterior to the root of the helix and the superior aspect of the tragus, blending with the superficial fascia overlying the temporal region. Its fibers course obliquely from the temporal fascia toward the anterior margin of the auricle, lying superficial to the cartilaginous framework of the pinna yet deep to the skin and adnexal structures. Posterior to it, the lateral surface of the auricular cartilage forms the contour of the concha and scapha, while superiorly the muscle abuts the temporoparietal fascia. Small fascial connections and adjacent extrinsic auricular muscles are suggested around the base of the pinna. Functionally, this is the most clinically relevant orientation for appreciating how the extrinsic auricular muscles relate to the superficial temporal fascia and the auriculotemporal neurovascular plane. Small, but not trivial. In rhytidectomy and otoplasty planning, the anterior auricular region is a common site for subcutaneous undermining and skin flap traction, and a clear understanding of where the auricularis anterior lies helps explain postoperative contour changes or localized tenderness near the helix root and preauricular crease. The lateral view also matches the operative field for preauricular incisions and reinforces that these muscles are variable and often rudimentary in humans, a frequent point of confusion in head and neck anatomy teaching. Use this artwork in head and neck gross anatomy lectures, facial plastic surgery atlases, and patient-facing educational materials describing preauricular incisions, otoplasty, or facelift dissection planes.
