Description
Seen from a lateral perspective, the anterior auricular muscle appears as a small, thin sheet of striated fibers lying immediately anterior to the auricle, superficial to the temporal fascia and overlying the root of the helix. Its short belly runs from the temporal (cranial) aponeurosis toward the anterior margin of the auricular cartilage, sitting superior to the tragus and anterolateral to the external acoustic meatus. Fine slips blend with adjacent connective tissue at the superior anterior auricle rather than forming a prominent tendon. Subtle anatomy. Functionally, this muscle is one of the extrinsic auricular muscles and contributes to slight anterior traction of the pinna, a movement that is rudimentary in most adults but clinically relevant as a landmark in the preauricular region. Plastic and otologic procedures place incisions and dissection planes near the anterior auricular muscle while protecting the superficial temporal vessels and branches of the facial nerve (temporal and zygomatic branches) that course in the same superficial tissue layers. Local anesthesia and facelift flap elevation in front of the ear can also distort or transect these delicate fibers, so a clear lateral relationship to the auricular cartilage helps when teaching safe planes.
