Description
Laterally, the extrinsic auricular musculature is centered on the superior auricular muscle, a thin, fan-shaped slip arising from the epicranial aponeurosis (galea aponeurotica) and descending inferiorly to insert onto the superior aspect of the auricular cartilage along the root of the helix. The pinna sits lateral to the temporoparietal fascia, with the superior auricular positioned superior to the auricular helix and posterior to the frontal region of the scalp. Adjacent landmarks would include the temporalis region anteriorly and the mastoid area posteriorly. Small and often variable. Functionally, the superior auricular contributes to subtle elevation of the pinna, but its real teaching value lies in the superficial fascial plane of the temporoparietal region and its relationship to the scalp layers. That plane is where the temporal branch of the facial nerve courses toward the frontalis and orbicularis oculi, so surgical dissection near the superior auricular attachment and temporoparietal fascia, for rhytidectomy, temporal brow lift, or otoplasty, must respect that nerve’s superficial course. Trauma, iatrogenic injury, or scarring in this area can produce frontalis weakness and brow ptosis. A clear lateral view helps you map safe planes.
