Description
Positioned deep to the dermal layer over the posterolateral scalp, the superior auricular muscle appears as a fan-shaped slip arising from the epicranial aponeurosis and sweeping inferiorly toward the root of the auricle. From this posterior perspective, its fibers course toward the superior aspect of the auricular cartilage, sitting superficial to the temporalis fascia and adjacent to the postauricular scalp. The auricle itself, including the helix and superior attachment region, anchors the composition laterally. Small but specific. Functionally, the superior auricular muscle is one of the extrinsic auricular muscles, a remnant of more mobile pinnae in other mammals, and its relationships matter more than its strength. Surgeons working around the postauricular region, including approaches for otoplasty, cochlear implant placement, and exposure of the mastoid cortex, routinely elevate skin flaps in the same tissue planes that separate dermis, subcutaneous tissue, and the temporoparietal fascia, where this muscle can be encountered or transected. This view also clarifies why auricular movement is limited in most adults and helps explain the variable appearance of the muscle during dissection, since its fibers blend with the galea and superficial fascia rather than forming a bulky, separable belly.
