Description
Positioned on the lateral scalp just superior to the auricle, the superior auricular muscle (musculus auricularis superior) spans from the temporal fascia and galea aponeurotica toward the superior aspect of the auricular cartilage. From a posterior perspective, its fibers read as a shallow, sweeping sheet that lies superficial to the temporalis region and blends with the periauricular fascia at the root of the helix. The auricle itself sits inferior and slightly anterior to the muscle belly, with the postauricular surface and superior margin of the pinna providing the immediate topographic reference. Clinically, this small extrinsic auricular muscle matters less for gross ear movement than for surgical planes and surface landmarks around the postauricular and temporal region. During postauricular approaches used in otologic surgery and cochlear implant placement, the surgeon works through skin, subcutaneous tissue, and the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, where the auricularis muscles and their fascial continuities can help orient dissection relative to the auricle and mastoid cortex. Innervation by the temporal branches of the facial nerve also makes the periauricular region a useful teaching example of how facial nerve fibers travel superficially and can be vulnerable with poorly placed incisions.
