Description

Arising from the venous plexuses posterior to the auricle, the posterior auricular vein descends inferiorly along the mastoid region, superficial to the insertion area of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and posterolateral to the external acoustic meatus. Tributaries from the scalp over the temporal and occipital regions converge near the posterior border of the pinna, while the superficial temporal vein lies more anterior and the occipital vein courses more posteriorly toward the suboccipital area. Yellow nerve tracings in this lateral head and neck model logically include the great auricular nerve crossing the sternocleidomastoid and the lesser occipital nerve ascending along its posterior margin, both running in close proximity to superficial veins. For clinicians, this vein matters because it sits in the operative and injection corridor behind the ear, a zone used for postauricular approaches to the mastoid and posterior tympanum and for local anesthetic infiltration around the auricular region. Its caliber and variability become relevant when bleeding complicates mastoidectomy incisions or when venous congestion and bruising follow blunt trauma to the auricle. Lymph node assessment in the posterior auricular (mastoid) region also benefits from understanding the nearby venous and neural anatomy. Small space, busy anatomy. Use this illustration in head and neck anatomy teaching to pair surface landmarks (mastoid process, auricle, posterior border of sternocleidomastoid) with the superficial venous pattern, or in ENT and plastic surgery texts discussing postauricular incision planning and regional anesthesia considerations. It also suits patient-facing procedural education where clear lateral relationships reduce ambiguity. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
