Description

Centered in the retroperitoneum, the abdominal aorta descends anterior to the lumbar vertebral bodies while the inferior vena cava courses just to its right, and from this posterior perspective the right colic vein is traced along the lateral abdominal wall toward the mesocolon of the ascending colon. Its smaller venous tributaries (venules) converge within the right colic vascular arcade, paralleling the right colic artery as both run within the mesentery toward the superior mesenteric vessels. Posteriorly, the right kidney and proximal ureter sit lateral to the great vessels, and the lumbar spinal column anchors orientation; a yellow plexus of autonomic nerves and lumbar branches fans across the posterior abdominal wall. This angle matters when you need to teach or plan dissection of the right colic pedicle from behind, where venous anatomy can be more variable than the arterial pattern and unexpected tributaries can complicate mobilization of the hepatic flexure. In right hemicolectomy and complete mesocolic excision, identifying the right colic vein’s relationship to the superior mesenteric vein and the plane of the mesocolon helps limit troublesome venous bleeding during central vascular ligation. Bleeds are rarely forgiving. Use this artwork for anatomy teaching blocks on midgut vascular supply, surgical education on laparoscopic or open right colectomy approaches, and figure support in colorectal, GI, and radiology publications discussing mesenteric venous drainage patterns.
