Description
Running along the posterior aspect of the ascending colon, the right colic vein is shown coursing medially within the mesocolon to join the superior mesenteric venous trunk, with the inferior vena cava positioned posterior and slightly right of midline as a deeper landmark. Segmental venules converge into the right colic vein along the colonic wall, while adjacent tributaries of the superior mesenteric vein collect blood from the ileum and proximal colon in the same mesenteric plane. The abdominal aorta lies left of the caval system, and the kidneys sit posterolateral to the great vessels, framing the retroperitoneal depth behind the bowel loops. Orientation stays true to posterior anatomical position. Posterior visualization of the right colic vein matters because venous anatomy of the right colon is variable and often governs intraoperative decisions during right hemicolectomy and complete mesocolic excision, where central vascular ligation targets branches near the superior mesenteric vein. Injury at this confluence can produce brisk mesenteric hemorrhage or postoperative venous congestion of the remaining colon, and the risk rises when the right colic vein drains directly into the superior mesenteric venous trunk rather than via the gastrocolic trunk of Henle.
