Description
Running along the posterolateral aspect of the forearm and arm, the cephalic vein is highlighted as a superficial blue channel ascending from the dorsal venous network of the hand toward the lateral border of the biceps brachii. Proximally, it tracks in the lateral bicipital groove, remaining lateral to the biceps tendon and superficial to the fascia overlying brachialis and triceps brachii as it approaches the shoulder. Near the deltopectoral region, its superior trajectory is emphasized as it curves anteriorly toward its typical termination in the axillary vein just inferior to the clavicle. Tendinous insertions at the wrist and hand are rendered in white against the red superficial musculature for spatial orientation. Posterior viewing clarifies what palpation often obscures, how a prominent cephalic vein can sit lateral and superficial while deeper paired venae comitantes follow the radial and ulnar arteries under the investing fascia. This matters in venous access planning. The cephalic vein is frequently selected for peripheral cannulation and serves as the outflow conduit in radiocephalic and brachiocephalic arteriovenous fistulas, yet its proximal course and the cephalic arch near the shoulder are common sites of stenosis that complicate dialysis access and catheter passage.
