Description
Arising from the stylomastoid foramen, the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) courses anterolaterally across the parotid region and divides into its extracranial branches, with temporal, zygomatic, and buccal rami fanning superiorly and anteriorly over the lateral face. The temporal rami ascend toward the frontotemporal scalp to reach the frontalis and superior orbicularis oculi, while the zygomatic rami pass medially across the zygomatic arch region toward the infraorbital area. Buccal rami run anteriorly across the masseter toward the buccinator and upper lip elevators, traveling in close association with the facial artery and vein as they traverse the cheek. Layering against the red facial musculature and adjacent vessels is explicit. Surface anatomy matters here. These branches are the ones most often encountered, and injured, during facelift (rhytidectomy) dissection, parotidectomy, and repair of zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures, where a few millimeters of depth can separate safe subcutaneous undermining from denervation of orbicularis oculi or upper lip elevators. The course of the temporal branch is a classic hazard zone as it crosses the zygomatic arch within the temporoparietal fascia, and buccal branches can be stretched or transected during cheek flap elevation. Small mistakes leave visible deficits. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy teaching to anchor the motor distribution of CN VII against specific muscles of facial expression, or in surgical education materials covering facial nerve injury patterns and incision planning around the parotid and zygomatic arch.
