Description
Originating from the inferior mental spines (genial tubercles) on the lingual surface of the mandibular symphysis, the geniohyoid runs posteriorly and slightly inferiorly toward the body of the hyoid bone, lying superior to the mylohyoid and immediately inferior to the genioglossus. A lateral skull and upper cervical spine context places the muscle deep to the mandibular body and suprahyoid region, with the hyoid suspended anterior to the laryngeal framework and typically projecting at the C3 level. Nearby bony landmarks include the mandibular teeth and ramus anteriorly and the cervical vertebrae and intervertebral discs posteriorly, helping anchor the suprahyoid musculature in a realistic head and neck profile. Small but telling. Geniohyoid matters because it couples mandibular depression with anterosuperior hyoid excursion during the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing, and it contributes to airway patency by stabilizing the hyoid when the tongue base moves posteriorly. Surgeons and radiologists also track it as a deep midline landmark: on CT or MRI it helps separate the sublingual space from more inferior suprahyoid planes, and its relationship to the mandible and hyoid guides interpretation of floor-of-mouth infections and the spread of odontogenic abscesses. Its innervation via C1 fibers traveling with the hypoglossal nerve is a frequent teaching point when correlating tongue and suprahyoid motor deficits. Otolaryngology and speech-language pathology teaching modules on dysphagia, as well as gross anatomy and head-and-neck dissection labs, can use this plate to orient learners to the suprahyoid layer beneath the mandible in an adult male.
