Description

Anterior (palmar) anatomy of the African adult male hand is presented with the distal forearm, carpus, metacarpus, and digits in anatomical position, with the median, ulnar, and superficial branch of the radial nerve traced as they enter the manus. The median nerve courses centrally at the volar wrist into the carpal tunnel region and divides into common and proper palmar digital nerves that run along the sides of the index, middle, and radial half of the ring finger. Ulnar nerve branches track along the ulnar border of the wrist into the hypothenar side of the palm, sending superficial sensory branches to the ulnar half of the ring finger and little finger while deep motor fibers are implied deep to the palmar aponeurosis. Radial sensory fibers remain more lateral, supplying the dorsolateral hand but meeting palmar territories at the thumb and radial margin through terminal cutaneous branches. Clear nerve territory boundaries. Palmar nerve mapping matters when symptoms do not respect textbook lines, which is common in carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy at Guyon’s canal, and combined lesions after distal radius fractures or volar plate fixation. This anterior perspective also supports safe incision planning for palmar lacerations and carpal tunnel release, where injury to the palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve or superficial ulnar sensory branches can produce painful dysesthesia. Digital nerve repair depends on this layout. Use this asset for gross anatomy and clinical neuroanatomy teaching of the upper limb, for hand surgery and emergency medicine references on sensory testing and nerve blocks, and for patient education materials explaining numbness patterns in the thumb, index, and ulnar digits. It also fits dermatome and peripheral nerve territory plates in medical textbooks, exam prep, and institutional e-learning modules. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
